The Tamil Nadu CM died at 11.30 pm on 5th December after being hospitalized for over two months. she was on life support after a heart attack on the previous day. Her death came as a shock particularly after the Apollo Hospitals where she was admitted had only recently said that she was to be discharged soon.
Her death marks the passing away of a rare persona in Indian politics. The only woman chief minister in south India, she was bold and always composed. In a political career with significant setbacks, she faced several lawsuits relating to corruption charges. But in recent times she had successfully broken away from the earlier negative public perception to someone who is only concerned with public service.
The death of CM Jayalalitha is a significant turning point in Dravidian politics. Fondly called ‘Amma’ she had introduced a unique way of launching low cost products under the Amma brand, like Amma mineral water, Amma vegetable shops, Amma pharmacy, Amma theatres, Amma cement etc. However the highlight was the Amma canteen which gave idly for 1 rupee each. The canteens fed millions of poor people.
The state has declared a three day mourning while the nation will mourning her death today. Kerala has declared a state holiday today with three day state mourning. Prime minister Modi with home minister are expected to reach Chennai.
We pray for her soul to rest in peace
